Diseases can affect
the eyes, with 5% of hyperthyroid patients developing
associated eye changes. Progressive inflammation of the
tissues around the eyes pushes them forward as it pulls
the eyelids back. Lower eyelids acquire a puffy look.
If needed orbital decompression surgery enlarges the
eye sockets and the eyes return to a more normal position.
Subsequent eyelid surgery is often performed to achieve
a normal coverage on the eye.
