Any time the eye is irritated it will tear even if they are usually excessively dry. Chronic irritation is painful and it requires a visit to the eye doctor. In fact any tearing which does not respond to over the counter drops should be evaluated. A tear duct may be blocked and tears cannot drain so the eye tears. Often the irritation and tearing is caused by loose eyelids. See Dr. Lemke for evaluation and treatment.
