Reconstructive Procedure: Ectropian / Turned Out Eyelid

Back to Proceduresarrow

Loosening of the eyelids is very common. The loose or lax eyelid often results in irritated, tearing or dry eye. The eyelid may be so loose that the eyelid actually falls away from the eye itself. Some cases result from tightening of the skin which pulls the eyelid away from the eye (cicatricial ectropion).

Surgical tightening of the eyelids is performed either in the office or in the ambulatory surgery center. Patients note improvement in most cases. The irritation, tearing, and dry sensations can continue to improve for months after the eyelid tightening.

Procedure Examples:

Ectropion
Turned Out Eyelid
After tightening, the eyelids now rest comfortably against the eyes.
Ectropian - Turned Out Eyelid
Burning and tearing eyes are caused by lower eyelid skin contracting and pulling the eyelids away from the eyes. In some instances drooping cheeks pull the eyelids down away from the eyes. Surgery tightens eyelids and a midface lift may be used to eliminate the downward pull under the eyes.
